How does the HCG diet work?
The name, HCG, is an abbreviation for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, and, it is basically the pregnancy hormone. The HCG hormone activates fat cells and forces them to release their contents for use by the mother as energy. Simultaneously, it prevents the body from breaking down muscle tissue and utilizing protein as an energy source. While a mother is pregnant, the fetus releases millions of units of HCG; however, while on the diet, you are receiving less than a thousand units per day. The fat releasing, muscle saving effects of HCG work at even low dosages, so you will not feel pregnant or nauseous.
A very important feature of this diet that is often overlooked is the ability for it to reset food cravings and habits. While on the HCG diet, your food intake is limited and restricted; and, therefore, it helps tobreak any food habits that you may have developed over the previous years. How does HCG Help You Lose Weight?
The HCG diet consisted of two main components
- An ultra-low-calorie diet of around 500 calories per day.
- The HCG hormone administered via daily injections.
By patient report, HCG reduces feelings of hunger. This allows them to eat very little comfortably. Why? It is believed the presence of HCG in the bloodstream takes the appetite away. In pregnant women, HCG often causes feelings of nausea in the early stages of pregnancy.
HCG is a pro-hormone which helps the body make more hormones. Since hormone deficiency or imbalance is usually part of the reason for weight gain, whether it’s your thyroid, or menopause (or andropause), this hormone offers help.
HCG injections keep you from losing muscle while you diet. By elevating hormone levels in the body, including testosterone, the HCG hormone creates an anabolic state (muscle-building) which counteracts the catabolic state (muscle-breakdown). There are hormone receptors on muscle fibers that respond to the increased hormone levels in patients taking the HCG hormone.
**Why does that matter? During a typical fasting diet that causes rapid loss of weight, there is a high amount of muscle that is lost. Because muscle is heavy, this loss looks good on the scale because the pounds are dropping quickly. When you lose muscle, it’s bad for your body, shape, and metabolism. The metabolism slows so much that dieter regain weight quickly, often regaining all the weight that was lost and then some. Additionally, it takes quite a bit of work to build back the muscle that has been lost. The use of HCG prevents this phenomenon.
How Is HCG Administered and Prescribed?
Only HCG injections have been shown to raise blood levels of HCG, so that is the only acceptable way of taking HCG at this time. Any other way of taking HCG, such as drops, pills, or sprays, are likely dissolved before ever reaching the blood. Thus, they do not raise blood levels and would be like taking nothing at all. A daily injection is currently the only proven method of taking HCG. Injections should only be taken with a prescription from a medical provider, and under medical supervision. How much weight can I lose during a HCG Diet?
During a three week (21 day) HCG, a patient using this diet may see weight loss of up to 15-18 pounds total. It is common to see patients lose between ½ and 1 pound per day, when using HCG and following the diet strictly.
How long is the diet program?
The HCG diet is a very low-fat, very low-calorie diet generally divided into three phases:
- Loading phase: Start taking HCG and eat plenty of high-fat, high-calorie foods for two days.
- Weight loss phase: Continue taking HCG and eat only 500 calories per day for 3–6 weeks.
- Maintenance phase: Stop taking HCG. Gradually increase food intake but avoid sugar and starch for four to six weeks.
While people seeking minimal weight loss may spend three weeks on the middle phase, those seeking significant weight loss may be advised to follow the diet for six weeks.
